The Writing Process

General Steps of Writing
  • Prewriting

1.  Choose and limit your subject

2.  Gather details

3.  Generate a message or thesis statement

4.  Prepare a "map" of your paper using a template such as an outline or flow chart (Inspiration software examples.  See OHS "Multimedia" folder for program.)

  • Write and Revise

5.  Write your first draft

6.  Review your first draft rewriting as necessary

  • Edit and Proofread

7.  Check your style, word choice, grammar, spelling, and punctuation

8.  Prepare your final paragraph or essay

Research Based Paper:  Steps of Writing
  • Prewriting

1.  Choose and limit your subject

3.  Generate a number of research questions and choose the one that most interests you

4.  Generate a message or thesis statement from your question

5 Prepare a working bibliography or annotated bibliography

6.  Gather information to support your ideas making notes

7.  Organize your information and write a final outline

  • Write and Revise

8.  Write your first draft

9.  Revise your first draft

  • Edit and Proof Read

10.  Check your style, word choice, grammar, spelling, and punctuation

11.  Write the final draft

12.  Write the final bibliography
