My family heritage is Norwegian and British. Norwegians used to be fairly easy to find in Ballard. Things are changing. When I was growing up in Seattle in the 60s and 70s the heart of the city's Scandinavian community was Ballard. We lived on the west side of Phinney Ridge, just a couple of blocks from the Woodland Park Zoo. And though some may dispute whether we were truly living in Ballard, my contention is that since I walked to school everyday, and those schools were in Ballard, that we lived in Ballard. My mother's side of the family made a consistent effort to remind us kids where our ancestors came from a few decades before. My grandmother lived with us through my childhood years, and I feel that it was her influence that kept the Norwegian culture alive and well in our home. It sprang forth mostly from the kitchen - in the form of cookies, cakes, lefse - but thankfully never lutefisk. I've tried lutefisk, and it's not something I would choose to feed even my enemies. Perhaps it was once a weapon used by the Vikings.
